Book search squats.

Whenever I go to a thrift store, I make a bee line to the book section. Training my eyes to spot certain names and looks of book spines, I do this squat where I pop up and down through the aisles trying to find that missing Donald Westlake novel, that Mad paperback, old comic strip collection, horror short story anthology, Golden Nature Guide, Jim Flora children's book, etc.

  1. You've got your technique wrong there - take your hands out of your pockets before crouching, because, if you spot a book you want, by the time you have managed to release your mitts, the book will probably have had enough time to escape . . .
Using a baited stick is also a good method of catching books. Volumes by Halldor Laxness are partial to salmon and anything by Peter Vos responds well to a worm.

  2. But my hands have to staying in resting position as my eyes glaze over multiple copies of Tinsel, Bridges of Madison County, and various dime a dozen romance novels. And every thrift store always has a copy or four of Tom Wolfe's "A Man in Full". Some trips I don't even remove my hands from the coziness of my jacket pockets!
